Caleruega: Close to Nature, Closer to God

After Hidden Valley and Camiguin, let me take you to another do-it-yourself trip. This time, we are going to a nice place in Batangas that’s ideal for weekend getaways for residents of Metro Manila and its nearby provinces in the south.

Welcome to Caleruega, a famous place for weddings and retreats because of its lush greenery and serene surroundings. Caleruega is located just a few kilometers from Tagaytay, on the way to Nasugbu town proper (Batangas). It is a place developed by the Dominican order as a home for pilgrimage. The place was named after the birthplace (Caleruega in Spain) of Saint Dominic, the founder of the religious Dominican order. I’m a nature lover and a Dominican that’s why this place will always be close to my heart πŸ™‚

Let me take you around Caleruega with these photos.

This is the Caleruega church. Napakarami nang ikinasal diyan and many brides-to-be dream to be wed there. In fact, if you are going to book for a wedding, you should do it a year ahead kasi halos booked na ang buong taon. Ganun karami ang gustong magpakasal diyan.

Just a few steps from the church, you will see this view.

Below is a photo of one of my favorite spots in Caleruega. I can stay here the whole day reading a book…..

…contemplating, or just admiring the view.

A short walk further down will take you to this lovely garden that sits beside Caleruega’s nursery where you can buy seedlings.

Some other things that you will enjoy in Caleruega are the koi pond (there are 2 koi ponds in the area and they are adding more)….

….the hanging bridge…

..and this man-made garden falls.

An uphill walk will take you to the Transfiguration Chapel, a place that has become famous for being the location of many movie shoots.

This is the view from the chapel.

While you’re on the hill, don’t forget to take a jump shot πŸ™‚ Enjoy!

Now, here’s how you will commute to Caleruega. It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3 πŸ™‚
1. At the bus station near EDSA-MRT, look for buses going to Nasugbu.
2. Ask the driver to drop you off at Evercrest Resort and Golf Course. Fare, as of today, is PhP106.00 per person.
3. There are tricycles waiting right where you will be dropped off by the bus. Tell the driver you’re going to Caleruega. Driver charges Php50.00 for a one-way trip. IMPORTANT: Get the driver’s mobile number because he’ll be the one to fetch you later (if you’re there for a day-tour only). Tricycle drivers would voluntary give you their number, pero mabuti na rin ang ma-remind sila baka makalimutan nilang mag-volunteer na magbigay.

TIP: If you’re going there for a day-tour, bring some food. Kasi walang malapit na kainan doon. You can have picnics there, hanap na lang kayo ng perfect spot amidst the sprawling green grounds under the sky πŸ™‚

If you’re up for a picnic under a canopy, Caleruega has canopies for rent. Php500 yata a day.

Sulit ang Caleruega for a mere Php30.00 entrance fee πŸ˜‰ Yes, Php30.00 lang ang entrance fee doon. The officer at the gate will give you a brochure about the place. Caleruega accepts day-tour as well as overnight stays. If you think you need more days to relax and recharge, you can stay there for days since it has dormitories and cottages. For further inquiries you may contact Caleruega at 09212709890.

  31. salamat pala sa pagdaan sa aking blog…

  32. nortehanon Mar 9th 2011

  33. your shots are so beautiful, the landscapes are simply stunning, love the silken effect in your waterfall shot, and most of all, your post is very helpful for travelers, really great info, I can see your heart out sharing your joys to others, the wonders and therapy of nature to us.

  34. hi Ms. N.

Caleruega is a bit far, kaya talagang sasadyain. I agree that the place is really nice. The chapel is just very very small so it’s perfect for a very intimate wedding. However, I would still say that the Church we were wed is much nicer because it’s bigger and it’s our parish. hehe.

And your photos! they are really beautiful. keep ’em coming! πŸ™‚

  35. nortehanon Mar 9th 2011

    Hi Mommy Kaye! Salamat!

  37. nortehanon Mar 10th 2011

Uy, tamang-tama, Mommy Kaye, kasi nasa Sta.

  38. Ms. N, naunahan mo pa ako magpunta jan. hehehe. balak ko siya puntahan same time sa pag-visit ko sa pink sisters. People say this is really a nice place daw.

  39. nortehanon Mar 9th 2011

Hi Sey! Sige, pagpunta mo doon diretso ka na sa Caleruega πŸ˜‰ Yes, it is a nice place πŸ˜‰

  40. ganda. lapit lang pala nito sa amin!!

  41. nortehanon Mar 9th 2011

  46. it looks so peaceful! feeling ko narelax na ko by looking at the photos.

  47. nortehanon Mar 10th 2011

    Hi PM! Salamat πŸ™‚

  48. The views are so beautiful! No wonder many want to get wed there… kasal na, pictorial pa. They really take care of the place and make it pictorial worthy by adding those gardens and pond and bridge. Hope the surrounding views will always remain as beautiful as that.

  49. nortehanon Mar 10th 2011

Yes, pati nga prenup shoot puwede dun na rin gawin πŸ˜‰ They actually made the place that way para ideal place for pilgrimage and retreats at hindi lang for weddings.

  50. wow Ms. N.! Looks like a place where one can have a breather. i like the reading spot you enjoy… hehehehe. na iimagine ko na magbasa dyan. πŸ™‚ thanks for the tips on how to get there! πŸ™‚

  51. nortehanon Mar 10th 2011

I so love that reading spot. And right in front of you ay yung eksena sa susunod na picture. Haaay…gusto ko na bumalik doon hehehe.

  59. nortehanon Mar 12th 2011

Hi Prop!

Take pictures! πŸ™‚ See yah around!

  60. I had this page bookmarked for future references… πŸ™‚

Have heared of this place from Manilan friends, and saw some pictures too… But then this post is quite extensive because I thought this is just for weddings…

And the entrance fee is shocking!!! Hahahah!

Salamat Miss N! Have just added this in my list of places to visit… πŸ™‚

  61. nortehanon Mar 14th 2011

I think most people who have heard the place think that it is just a venue for wedding. Perhaps it’s because it is often featured in wedding magazines or TV shows that feature weddings.

Yes, shocking ang entrance. Nakakatuwa nga eh. PhP30!

  62. I’ve been in Calaruega early this year, that was my !st time to visit that place, I thought its only the church and nothing, but I was wrong, what a beautiful place, every angle was the best place to take some picture. The only problem is their road, I want to be there again soon.

    Nice photo, enchanting!

  63. nortehanon Mar 14th 2011

Hi Cinco! Thank you for visiting my blog and for your kind words about my photos. Nakapunta ka na pala sa Caleruega. Yes, it’s a very common notion that it is just a place for weddings.

  64. I’ve never been to this place pero gustong gusto ko sana mpasyalan to. The place looks so peaceful and green…ang ganda nga for weddings:)

  65. nortehanon Mar 17th 2011

  74. Rechelle Ann Mar 22nd 2012

Hi! gusto ko din pumunta jan with my bf. .

  75. Hi Rechelle Ann,
No need to be afraid. Basta’t wag lang kayong magpapagabi. Mga 3 or 4 pm, okay na umalis dun. Marami namang buses from tagaytay going to Manila kaya hindi naman problema ang transpo. If hindi kayo makasakay ng bus pauwi sa Evercrest, sakay kayo ng jeep to Tagaytay. Dun marami nang bus going to Manila.

Wala namang additional fees. If I were you, magbaon kayo ng lunch, okay lang naman doon ang may baon. Basta lang you throw your trash properly.

Good luck and enjoy.

  76. Rechelle Ann Apr 1st 2012

    Hi Nortehanon!

Nakapunta na po kami sa caluruega last Friday, as a way of “bawi” to my bf since we’ll not going to see each other for more than 1 week. The place is so nice, so peaceful, so green, so bango ( amoy province talaga), and so masarap sa pakiramdam. Dami nga namin pictures dun eh. .Una kami pumunta dun sa way papuntang chapel, we spend some minutes their then mejo bumaba kami para kumaen ( doon kami naglatag ng banig at kumaen at mejo nagpahinga narin since hiningal kami sa pagakyat). After that pumunta kami sa church.

“So yun ang ginawa namin”.

. So to total up we spent 265.00 per head in our transpo and more or less 4 hours of traveling. . Napagod kami sa byahe!grabe!

    Lesson:

Next plan, beach swimming naman. Can you recommend any beach in Cavite or Batangas na mura lang pero maganda???

Anyway, thank you for the knowledge in Caluruega.

  78. Rechelle Ann Apr 20th 2012

    @nortehanon

Hindi lang pala bf ko ung kasama ko sa outing, plan namin magouting ng mga friends ko as a celebration to my and my friend’s bday. . Mas preffer daw nila sa beach in batangas pero pwede na din sa pool in laguna basta maganda pero mura. . We only have a budget of 2k for the accommodation kaya naghahanap ako ng small enterprise na beach sa Batangas kaso wala silang site eh kaya hindi ko makita kung maganda.

  79. Try mo lang maghanap mabuti, I’m sure makakita kita kayo ng nice place for your budget.

  80. Thanks, your post is very helpful. πŸ™‚ Do they reply in text or call? Or we need to go to the place for booking? Thanks

  81. Hi Ethel, thank you, too, for dropping in.
Yes, they do reply in text or call. If you’re on a day trip, no need to book πŸ˜‰ Have fun!

  82. Im from Calamba Laguna..how do i get there?

  83. Hi pJay,
Try the shuttle service available at the Calamba Central Terminal. A friend of mine also told me there are also vans beside Waltermart in Calamba that’s bound for Tagaytay.

I’ve also read from the internet that there are jeepneys in Calamba bound for Balibago complex in Sta. Rosa. From Sta. Rosa, there are jeepneys bound for Tagaytay.

From Tagaytay, there are buses bound for Nasugbu. Meron din yatang mga jeep. Just ask around, mababait naman nga tags-Tagaytay πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the inquiry. Enjoy Caleruega, pJay!

  84. DOminican Feb 5th 2013

ENJOY TLGA DITO LALO NA PAG MAY ACTIVIES.. ANG LAMIG! AT KAHIT NAKAKAPAGOD UMAAKYAT WORTH IT NAMAN!

  85. Hello fellow Dominican πŸ˜‰
Yes, super enjoy ako pag andyan ako dati. And I miss that place na.

Hmn, siguro di ka muna nag-exercise bago pumunta ka pumunta dyan no? hehe
