A Lesson Learned On the Road

I love to travel not only for the chance to bask in nature’s blessings or to have some peace and quiet. I love to travel because most of the time I’m on the road, I experience life-changing moments and learn lessons from people I meet along the way…

Like when I met this man. Let’s call him R. He sells arm warmers for bikers and jeepney drivers.

Like most of us, Filipino workers, he works with enthusiasm. He is already out in the streets early in the morning.

Like most Filipino laborers, he toils under the searing heat of the sun, tulo-pawis, halos magliyab na ang anit sa init.

Like many Filipino vendors, after a day’s tiring work he often goes home with an amount that’s barely enough for two decent meals.

Like many Filipino workers in the streets, he risks his life and limb chasing jeepneys and passing bikers.

But UNLIKE most of us, Filipino workers, R does his work diligently every day even if he has no hands and legs. He was born without them.

(Pictures taken with permission from the subject. Before I took the pictures he asked for two things. In his own words, he said, “Wag niyo ho sanang pagkakakitaan ang litrato ko at wag ho sana na mapagtawanan.” I’m keeping that promise, R.)

  1. Inspiring!

I’m still blessed. Thanks sa Kanya!

  2. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

    Hi MP!

Yes, we are still blessed. At salamat nga sa Kanya. I read your latest post at salamat din sa Kanya dahil hindi kayo pinabayaan during those times. At least safe kayo sa apartel na yun.

  3. kapag may mga panahong puno ako ng reklamo sa buhay, bigla ka po magpopost, mapapabasa ako at nareremind ako kung gano pa rin ako kaswerte despite sa kung anu-anong SHit (sorry for the word Ms. N) na nangyayari sa buhay ko. that istead of complaining, i should be thankful.. thankful for everything i have.. im more than lucky kumpara sa iba..

  4. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

Hi Yanah!

    P.S.
No need to apologize for the SH_ _ word πŸ™‚

  5. Mr. R really have a positive attitude isn’t it? He is indeed a living testimony for us to move forward and be grateful with what we have.

Let us count our blessings and name them one by one. for sure we will be so grateful that we have a living God who really loves us so much.

i also have the same concept post as you did. http://ablogslifezeb.blogspot.com/2009/06/be-grateful-with-what-you-have.html πŸ˜€

    Godbless YOU more and more!

  6. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

Yes, Zeb, I admire R for his attitude. His story teaches us two things: to be grateful and to do our best when we are at work, especially when we work in a place that’s better than the street.

Thank you for sharing the link to your post about the Chinese girl. Nabasa ko na.
    God bless you, too!

  7. R is for resilience. When most of the people who are complete with their limbs complain about this and that of what their life should be,he was right there doing what he’s doing.Instead of choosing to stay home and let his family members do things for him,he braves the dangerous streets to earn a living for himself or maybe for his family. An everyday hero, everyday inspiration.

miss N,napakalaki ng pinagkaiba ng kamera mo sa kamera ng iba.while most people just took photos of where they have been, you took photos of where should we be going. its a gift na napaka unique sa’yo,. every picture, every story, eye opener lagi para sa akin.salamat.

  8. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

  9. thanks for sharing R’s story, ms n. he is admirable!

  10. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

    He truly is, Dinah.

  12. nortehanon Nov 5th 2010

    Jayvie,
Here o, box ng tissue πŸ˜€

Haha!

  19. Some even have a much easier job than him but they still complain just like my dad. I liked what he say before you took the photo, he’s worried and his self esteem seemed to be low and he still trusted you. He needs help and comfort, he is a hero to his family and he should be proud of that.

Anyhoo, everytime I visit your kick ass blog, you inspire me and makes me even more of a mature person. Thanks Miss N!

  20. nortehanon Nov 6th 2010

Maraming salamat, iho. Lalong humaba ang hair ko hehehe.

Yes, tama ka, some people are in a much easier working condition than him, pero madalas marami pa ring complain.

  21. very moving post.

kudos to R! makes me remember ung walang paa sa amin na nagtitinda ng sweepstakes ticket way back in the 80s.

  22. nortehanon Nov 6th 2010

    Thank you, Father.

  23. I always have a soft heart for people with disabilties yet they strive hard to live like most of us do. We dnt need to offer them money or alms in any form. Acceptance in our society is what they most need. And this is what most people can’t give. They show criticisms instead.

Thanks for sharing Miss N. I’m deeply moved…

  24. nortehanon Nov 6th 2010

You are right, talagang acceptance sa society ang kailangan nila. And sadly, like you said, minsan ito ang mahirap nating ibigay sa kanila.

    You are welcome, MissGBP πŸ™‚

    God bless!

  25. Our world is one big educational institution. Any time, any place, there’s always a lesson to be learned. All you got to do is look around and take note.

  26. nortehanon Nov 6th 2010

I agree. There is a lot to learn from the world around us. The world is a big, big school πŸ˜‰

  27. People like him touches my heart and inspires me to be a missionary. I may not be ministering to the likes of them now, but I know that God is preparing my path so I could better minister to them in the future. I’m happy to know that he sees and lives life that other “complete” people don’t. tnx for sharing this one story!:-)

The pic, btw, is artfully done…I like th color:-)
I also liek your menu layout above:-)

God bless and may you continue to inspire us with your stories!:-)

  28. nortehanon Nov 9th 2010

Hello! Welcome to my blog and thank you for visiting.

I wish you well. I hope to read more of your stories.

Thank you for your kind words about the pictures and the header image.

    God bless you, too!

  29. a very touching post, very inspirational and moving, he is a hero in many ways, especially to those who see him for his continued dedication to life. if you see him again, please tell him “no, i did not laugh at him, but i smiled for the inspiration he gives, and if I could only buy from his some warmers”

  30. nortehanon Nov 9th 2010

I would definitely tell him that, Ms. Betchai πŸ™‚
    Salamat.

  31. May isang church motivational speaker na ang pangalan niya ay Nick, kamukha po niya si R na they simply live their lives the way it should be. Parang walang angal at puro positivity.
    Nakakaguilty.

  32. nortehanon Nov 8th 2010

“…they simply live their lives the way it should be”>>>This is how we should live πŸ˜‰

Tama ang prof mo, Pong. Ang kalsada ay sadyang napakalaking silid-aralan. Ito rin ay napakalaking bahay.

Be Blessed R.

    God Bless Miss N.

  34. nortehanon Nov 9th 2010

    Agree po ako πŸ™‚
God bless din po, Lolo Jem!

  35. I cried while reading the post. It reminds me on how I blessed I am and yet in just small trial I fold and blame someone for it… “Why me”…
It’s such a shame that normal people just don’t know how to appreciate what life did bring to us…

He should serve as an inspiration to those who are like me who most likely give up when bad things happen…

    whew!!

  36. nortehanon Nov 10th 2010

    Tahan na, iha πŸ™‚
I’m glad you were reminded by the post how blessed you are.
Hello and welcome to my blog. Thank you for visiting, ella sun!

nice story. perstaym magbasa dito. πŸ˜€

  38. nortehanon Nov 10th 2010

  39. uu naman no problem πŸ˜€

  40. nortehanon Nov 11th 2010
