The Golden Grain

About 3 billion people depend on rice for sustenance. That’s nearly half the population of the whole world. So can you imagine the world without rice?
Over at Yhen’s blog, she is promoting love for rice through a fan sign campaign. It is actually a contest being held to celebrate the National Rice Awareness Month. Deadline is Nov. 20 so there are still a few days left to catch up
“Since the 1990s, population growth has been faster than the growth in rice production. It is estimated that by 2025, there should be a 30% increase of rice production to meet the demand of a growing population. However, many factors such as climate change, soil erosion, and water shortage pose a threat to rice production.” Unless we learn to take care of our environment and all other resources that are valuable to rice production, the survival of half of the world’s population is threatened.
And please do not waste rice. By saving rice, you are not only helping sustain the supply of rice, you are also honoring this hero’s hands.

Hi Yhen,
You’re the one from PhilRice in CLSU right?
I’d love to go to your book launch since I work/live in Ortigas. But it’s my Mom’s birthday, hopefully we would celebrate near Megamall lang so I can drop by on your launch. Invited ba kame lahat dito? Hehehe.
Anyway, I am also from Nueva Ecija.
Pavisit ng site mo and campaign.

our family used to have a rice field, but converted it to mango plantation…hindi na kase kaya ng tatay ko magmaintain ng palay, masyadong matrabaho unlike ng mangoes…
but i guess growing up knowing how hard it is to produce rice, we all learn the value of not wasting it:D

But I also can’t imagine my life without rice. And the world without rice. May naalala tuloy ako. Sa school kasi namin, libre yung lunch. Tapos, yung isang teacher, tapos na sya kumain pero may tira pa syang rice. Sobrang dami. When another co-teacher said na sa kanya na lang yung tirang rice, ayun, nadumihan na yung kanin.
“Sayang naman yan, ang dami-daming hindi kumakain…”
said the co-teacher…
Then the other replied jokingly: “Aba’y pakialam ko naman sa kanila?” and laughed.
Grabe. I was shocked to hear that from a pre-school teacher like me who teaches kids to value everything that they get. Grabe lang talaga.
