Playground

I took this picture last weekend on my trip to my home province. Specifically, this picture was taken in Catarman, the capital municipality of Northern Samar.

Catarman Airport

If you will look closely into the picture, I think this road can accommodate more than a dozen lanes, and at 1,350 meters, this seems to be a pretty wide and long road for a second class municipality.

But this isn’t just an ordinary road.

This is a park.

This is a playground.

This is a lambingan lane.

This is a barkada stop.

This is a jogging lane.

This is a place to walk your dog.

This is a place to strut your new bike, tricycle, or car.

This is a place where ati-atihan groups practice their routines before competitions.

At one end of this road, you will see the ocean. At the other end, you will see mountains. So this is really a perfect place to sit back and lounge around, or dream no matter how impossible those dreams are.

Dito ako nagsimulang maging daydream believer LOL :D. When I first went to this place, the first thing I did was rush to my friend’s house (which was just a few feet away) and borrow his bike. Then I started pedaling from one end to another.

But this road has a more important role in the economy of the province because, ladies and gentlemen, this is the Catarman National Airport, a minor commercial domestic airport which now serves three airline companies.

Kakaiba, di po ba? I’ve been to many other parts of the country but this is the only airport I know of which can serve purposes other than being a place where airplanes take off and land.

  3. Only in the Philippines!

This reminds me of my frequent trips to Samar & Leyte when I was still working as a Training Consultant. We have had a lot of seminars and workshops conducted in this part of the country. Now I miss tuba (coco wine). He he!

It’s been a while since the last time I was here my friend. It’s good to be back. Ciao!

  4. Welcome back, Rev.

‘Yung bahalina 😉

  5. wow! wow! an ocean at one end, and mountains on the other! sooo nice. parang ang sarap nga magbike or magroller blades hehe =)

  6. Thanks, Jayvie. Sarap nga dyan mag-bike. Hmn, parang wala pa akong nakitang nag-roller blades dyan.

I’ve never been to Samar, the closest i was is at the other side of San Juanico bridge…..
dream ko pumunta at tingnan itong playground nyo.

  8. Yes, bluguy, onli in out lupang hinirang 🙂 Sige, minsan mamasyal ka at maglaro sa playground na ‘yan 🙂

  9. Kakatuwa naman ang airport na ito… Hehehe…

They could all be lumped in one day within the week.

Wow! Nice naman nung place. Namiss ko tuloy ang province namin. Hope I can go home by March. Its been months na. I miss our hometown, my friends and espcially si Mama at Sis ko. Ang lawak naman ng daanan nyo. Kaya maraming nagbabike dyan. Maganda yung place to practice and to stroll. Syempre business class type din at the same time flag carrier. Hehehe!

  12. Wow, taga-Zamboanga ka pala. Welcome dito sa bahay ko. Sige, piktyuran mo airport ninyo. Let me know kapag na-post mo na 🙂

  13. Ayos yan ah! Ang daming purpose ng place na yan. Airport na, pangbayang pasyalan at tambayan pa. Hihi..

  14. oo, emilayskie, all-in-one yan hehehe. Salamat.

  15. Wow! And I thought Bacolod airport (6 years ago) is the most unmodernized airport here. I have never been to Samar and they really have a very interesting airport. Very province!

Thanks for passing by my site. Balik balik ako dito ah!

  16. Hi! Salamat sa pagdaan. I’ve been to Bacolod, too, and saw the old airport.

very communitarian pala ang purpose ng airport ninyo!ü what made me smile is that in Catarman, people still go out and interact with other people. how saddening for us in the city that we now rarely go out of our houses and explore the world through internet, which is a good tool for obtaining information but a bad substitute for real interpersonal relationships…

  18. nortehanon Mar 15th 2009

Yep, Brothery Utoy. Very communitarian talaga. I forgot to mention, tuwing madaling araw pag weekend, nagiging market din yan, tindahan ng mga root crops na iniluluwas from other parts of the province.

“…explore the world through internet, which is a good tool for obtaining information but a bad substitute for real interpersonal relationships…”>>>Yeah, I’m with you in that line of thought, Brother Utoy. Nothing can substitute real personal interactions.

Excited akong malaman 😉

Yeah, medyo delikado nga kung iisipin. But the local government and the airport officials see to it naman na before mag-land ang plane ay safe ang lahat.

  21. im from catarman but currently studying here in manila!

yup kakaiba talaga yang airport namen! hehe i experienced going to this runway!

now uwi ako for summer vacation pakaka pag stroll na naman ako sa catarman and uunahin ko ang runway! hehe

  22. nortehanon Mar 18th 2009

    Gene Frank!
Uy! It’s nice to see another kababayan dropping in. How did you find my blog? Taga-saan ka sa Catarman? Medyo hindi talaga ako from Catarman. I’ve lived kasi in many places in Northern Samar so I consider myself a resident of many different towns hehehe.

Good luck to your studies.

  23. elo!

    Sure, sure!
I would love to see another Nortehanon blogger 😉

the Answer is, FRESH AIR from the PACIFIC ocean.

4:30am:- 6:30am jogging time, lahat ng ages dito dami nag excercise tuwing umaga.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT! in a matter of seconds once the airplane safely touchdown(di pa umabot sa terminal), ang mga tao pwd na mag cross sa runway.

Catarman is a very friendly and peaceful community.

After posting this, I am on my way to runway, at tambay at the other end malapit sa dagat.

  26. nortehanon Apr 2nd 2009

Wow, salamat sa mahabang comment, alimokoi. Or should I say, Alejandro? 😉

Kumusta naman an pamasyada mo sa runway kanina?

I agree. Catarman is a very friendly and peaceful community.

  27. alimokoi May 10th 2009

    FUNNY STORY!

our construction worker is residing from dalakit, kahapon ng umaga papunta siyang downtown , eh sa runway sya palagi dumadaan. di cya naniwala sa mga tanod ng dalakit na may nang dadakip in the other side… ayun matigas ang ulo…. tumawid kasama ung dalawa pang tao… pag katawid nilang tatlo sabay BULAGA! huli sila ng mga pulis! hehehe nakulong tuloy sila from 7am to around 3pm! hehe! 1st offense palang un sa susunod raw may multa pang 1thou and 1 wik na ung imprisonment!

    🙂

  29. alimokoi May 11th 2009

    Sad Story :

Monday, After na fully implement na yung bawal dumaan sa runway, doon sa diversion road malapit may shell gasoline station. Yun! isang babae nasagasaan, patay. kawawa naman. 🙁
